Our History

Florida’s Original

European and craft beer bar!

Since 1974

Our intention was never to be the typical  ” authentic”  German restaurant.  Rather, we  strive to bring you flavors from Bavaria, changed a little and Americanized through the generations.   Just like my Oma served to me.

Please enjoy our unique twist on some Bavarian classics.

Mr. Dunderbak’s has become a gathering place for family and friends of all ages to share quality time together, while enjoying great homemade food and the most unique draft and bottle beer selection in the state. We also make our own beer!

Mr. Dunderbak’s Tampa was founded in 1974 at University mall, just next to U.S.F., as a franchise store.

Over the years the franchise of 3o plus stores folded, and the last three stores that use the name Mr. Dunderbaks are uniquely different and no longer affiliated.  There is one in Daytona & Whitehall, PA.

The current ownership purchased the mall location in 1997 and created a new version of  the restaurant. And have enlarged the draft selection from 6 to 65 over the last 20 years

In 2009 we moved to the current Tampa Palms location.

Over the years, our Dunderbak’s grew into a Tampa landmark  it is today. The menu got bigger, the draft list grew and our bottle collection is now over 500 different craft and European brands.

You will find my Oma’s recipes, a little Americanized over the generations, but with a clear Swabisch heritage .

We serve big double decker sandwiches, salads, wurst, schnitzels, craft and European beer.

We have also fostered a multi generational  following for over four decades!

If you have lived in Tampa or gone to USF,  you probably have a Dunder story!

Expect a wait during the dinner hour.

All our meals are cooked to order and most everything is made in house.

Please understand we are a small restaurant and  good food takes time.   Thank you.

Our Beer

beer geek

We have 60 draft beers

and well over 500 different individual bottles.

Including JB’s  rare and vintage bottle list.

A complete up to date list is always on line
Click on the main menu for a list and description of every beer.
You can also link to Rate beer or Beer Advocate for more information.
If you do, we politely ask you to ignore the ratings. And try the beer!  Try something different, learn about the style and ask us a few questions.  Have more that one and then decide if you like it!.
We rinse the glass for you, and use the appropriate glass for the style.
Step out of your comfort zone and find out why Dunderbak’s has been anointed by the  Tampa Bay Times  a “BEER PARADISE”
  Prosit!   JB

You may have to share a table!

german tables

We  have long communal  tables from the Hofbrau haus in Munchen.

And on the weekends live German music during the dinner hour.

You may have to sit with someone you don’t know and it gets a little loud,

but if you haven’t been to the Wiesn’,

Dunderbak’s is the next best thing!

Our cow was stolen a few years ago.

Six months later she found her way back, with tales of bad,

 yellow beer being served elsewhere.

She was glad to be home.  And said she will never leave again.
